Can Joro spiders bite? A guide to the giant spiders headed for the East Coast this summer.
A recent study suggests that the large and invasive Joro spiders may soon expand their presence across the Northeastern United States, with little indication of disappearing anytime soon.
Since their initial sightings in Georgia in 2013 and 2014, the Joro spider population has proliferated in the state and other regions of the Southeast.
Researchers from Clemson University have determined that the species is rapidly spreading beyond South Carolina, with data indicating potential sightings in most of the eastern United States.
Here’s what we know about Joro spiders:
Where are Joro spiders found in the US? According to iNaturalist.org, Joro spiders predominantly inhabit Georgia but have migrated to neighboring states. They have been observed in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee, with sightings reported in Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Maryland as well.
Furthermore, research conducted at the University of Georgia reveals that Joro spiders are remarkably resilient to freezing conditions compared to golden silk spiders. Their higher metabolism and heart rate enable them to endure colder climates, potentially facilitating their expansion into northern regions.
How did Joro spiders arrive in the US?
The exact method of the Joro spiders’ introduction to the United States remains unclear, although it is speculated that they were likely transported via shipping containers. Over the course of nearly a decade, the species has rapidly proliferated across Georgia and other Southeastern states.
Can Joro spiders fly?
While Joro spiders lack wings, they possess the ability to harness wind currents for transportation.
Joro spider hatchlings typically emerge during spring and early summer. Using their silk as a form of ballooning, similar to the concept depicted in the animated movie “Charlotte’s Web,” these tiny spiders drift on wind currents. While most web spiders engage in some form of ballooning, Joro spiders initiate their journey from elevated positions. With sufficiently long silk strands, they can be carried by winds for distances exceeding 100 miles.
How large are Joro spiders?
Belonging to the golden silk orb-weaver family, Joro spiders are renowned for their sizable build. Like their native counterparts in the Southeastern United States, they construct expansive webs woven from golden-colored silk.
When their legs are fully extended, adult female Joro spiders can measure between 6 to 8 inches in length.
Despite the formidable size of female Joro spiders, reaching dimensions comparable to the size of one’s palm, they pose no significant threat to humans. Their venom is relatively weak, and their small fangs make it challenging to penetrate human skin.
Are Joro spiders venomous?
While Joro spiders possess venom, they rarely bite unless provoked. Their bites typically result in localized discomfort and redness, akin to bee stings.
