Newly published data demonstrates that the Home Secretary’s robust actions to overhaul the UK’s immigration system and reduce unsustainable levels of migration are yielding positive results.

The figures indicate a significant drop in the number of dependants accompanying students to the UK, plummeting by nearly 80% compared to the same period last year. This decline is attributed to recent government measures aimed at tightening student visas, preventing most international students from bringing family members and closing loopholes that allowed visa switching for work purposes.

Home Secretary James Cleverly emphasized the necessity of curbing migration to restore public confidence in the immigration system, alleviate pressure on public services, and prevent wage suppression. He expressed satisfaction with the immediate impact of the measures and assured continued progress in reducing migration levels.

Additionally, the data highlights a considerable imbalance in the ratio of dependant applications to main applicants on Health and Care visas, prompting the government to take action to restrict care workers from bringing dependants. Measures include requiring care providers to register with the Care Quality Commission to combat exploitation and abuse within the sector.

Furthermore, the government is implementing various measures to address social care needs domestically, acknowledging that immigration alone is not a sustainable solution. Initiatives include enhancing training, career pathways, and job prospects for domestic social care workers.

Other significant measures include raising the salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas, commissioning a review of the Graduate route for international students, and replacing the Shortage Occupation List with an Immigration Salary List.

As the government continues its efforts to reform the immigration system and combat rising migration, progress is evident in reduced illegal crossings and enhanced enforcement measures. With the passage of the Safety of Rwanda Act and the ratification of the Treaty with Rwanda, preparations are underway for the first flight to Rwanda within the next few months.
